The monthly seminars are a great way to begin your study program and become a more knowledgeable member. The seminars cover the core topics that overlap all ranks and help you become a more professional firefighter or officer. Try to read through the material that we will cover before coming to class.
Our advice at this time for the company officer student is to begin a light reading schedule, a familiarization if you will, utilizing firehouse books and firehouse time. During the summer months, the best strategy is to not sacrifice "Family and Friends Time" and enjoy the beautiful weather with your family and friends. Then in September, get your own books organized and begin a formal organized reading schedule. When the time is right, we will begin our Company Officer's program that will take you to the finish line and put you in position to achieve your goal.
Fire Tech has compiled the “12 Week Basic Company Officer’s Study Guide” that will show you what you should be reading at this early stage.
The Battalion Chiefs test is most likely about 12-14 months away. Some students have already commented to us that they are going to “give it a good 6 to 9 months”. Well if everyone gives it a good 6 months, they may have a shot, but chances are that many students will give it a good 12 months or more for the Battalion Chief’s test. Chances are high, that the student who studies twice as hard for twice as long will be rewarded.
Our advice to the Battalion Chief candidate is to begin reading now and continue through the summer. Try getting up early in the morning in the summer and getting 2 to 4 hours in before the family is awake and ready to go play. Then drop the books and enjoy the rest of the day.
Fire Tech will most likely begin our Battalion Chief program in September, which will focus in on Chief specific topics. This program, when combined with the overlap material from our Company Officers Seminars, will put you in the money on the B.C.’s list.
Fire Tech has compiled the “12 Week Battalion Chief Study Guide” which shows you:
